What is the AAT?

Founded in 1980, and with more than 124,000 members and students, the Association of Accounting Technicians is the world's leading professional body for accounting technicians.  AAT is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) a global organisation for the accountancy profession.

What Is An AAT Licensed Accountant?

An AAT Licensed Accountant is an individual who offers accountancy, taxation and related consultancy services to the clients.. This might be as a sole trader, in partnership or as a limited company.

The AAT has a mandatory scheme specifically designed to support and regulate those Members in Practice within the UK.

What Can An AAT Licensed Accountant Do For You And Your Business?

AAT Licensed Accountants can apply for a licence in the following areas:

  • Bookkeeping
  • Financial accounts and accounts preparation
  • VAT
  • Computerised accountancy systems
  • Payroll
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Management accounting

  • Inheritance tax
  • Capital gains tax

AAT Licensed Accountants are also recognised by over 80 major mortgage lenders in respect of accounts prepared in support of mortgage loan applications.

How Are Standards Maintained?

All AAT licensed members are required to comply with the conditions including:

  • maintaining adequate PII
  • maintaining continuity cover
  • compliance with all data protection legislation in force
  • compliance with the CPD policy
  • compliance with money-laundering legislation
  • completing an annual renewal.


Members in Practice must renew their registration annually to maintain their Licensed status and comply with professional and ethical standards.

The AAT’s CPD scheme ensures that Members stay up-to-date with skills and knowledge, supported by the AAT to help businesses achieve their objectives and enhance performance.
